About Gadwal

Gadwal city is located on the banks of River Krishna in Mahbubnagar district of Telangana. It is located at a distance of 61 km away from the district Headquarters Mahbubnagar and 190 km away from the state capital Hyderabad. The city belongs to Deccan region of South India. The city is also referred as Vidvadgadwala.

About Gadwal

People of all religions and communities reside in the city and they mostly speak Telugu apart from Hindi and Urdu. Gadwal city holds a total population of 57,569 people within its boundary as per 2011 population census. Very close to the city the solar energy project named Priyadarshini Jurala’s project is incorporated to produce electric power using solar energy. Also a big dam with 72 gates is also under construction now.

Geography of Gadwal

Gadwal city covers a total area of 12.62 sq km within its boundary. Gadwal city is elevated at a height of 324 meters above sea level that is about 1063 feet and it got its co-ordinates at 16.23° North latitude and 77.8° East longitude. The city is bounded by Atmakur Mandal in the North, Dharur Mandal in the west, Kothakota Mandal in the East and Chinnachintakunta Mandal in the North.

Gadwal city is located on the banks of Balancing Reservoir and it is surrounded by many ponds. River Krishna flows very close to the North east border of the city. Summers are hot and winters are cool in the city.

The Rajaveedhi locality is the north of Gadwal homes the Veerabhadra Swamy temple and the Gandhi Chowk. The Bheem Nagar locality in the city homes the famous Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy temple and many commercial establishments. The Housing board colony in the city is known for Vivek book world. The Lingam Bagh colony is sited in the middle of the city. The Pedda Agrahram locality in the bottom of the city is popular of Ahobila Matt Narashima pilgrim.

Gadwal constitutes a municipality which consists of 33 wards for which elections are conducted once in 5 years to elect 33 ward members to the Gadwal municipality to form the local body. Gadwal is one of the four municipalities in Mahbubnagar apart from Mahbubnagar, Wanaparthy and Narayanpet. Out of the 33 wards 9 wards constitutes revenue wards of the municipality.

Gadwal municipality is established by the Indian constitution in the year 1950 as a 3rd grade municipality later in 2011 Gadwal is upgraded to 2nd grade municipality. The Gadwal municipality governs the city under various sections like the public health section, engineering section, town planning section, accounts section, UPSP section and revenue section. 

The various amenities offered by the Gadwal municipality are roads, sewage connection, drainage, storm water drains, open markets, burial grounds, overhead water tanks, 3 parks, 1 playground, 7 banquet halls, 1 Shahi Khanas, street lights, water supply to the city through River Krishna reservoir, house service connection, public taps, stand posts, hospital and many more.

Gadwal city falls within Nagarkurnool Lok Sabha constituency and the current MP of the constituency is Shri Yellaiah Nandi elected to Indian parliament in the year 2014. Gadwal belongs to Gadwal Vidhan Sabah constituency with assembly constituency number 79 and the current MLA of the constituency is Smt. Aruna D.K elected to Telangana legislative assembly in the year 2014.

Gadwal Samsthanam in Gadwal

Gadwal city was once the Headquarters of Gadwal Samsthanam which was a feudatory or vassal to the Nizam of Hyderabad. Gadwal Samsthanam was a part of Raichur district once and was one of the three vitla samsthanams in India apart from the Jatprole samsthanam and Wanaparthy samsthanam.

The Gagwal fort or the Nalla Somanadri fort on the banks of River Krishna was built Somashekar Ananda Reddy a renowned Gadwal Samsthanam ruler popularly called as Somanadri who came from Poodoor village. The current Gadwal city was developed around this fort only. Gadwal Samsthanam was protected by Mallichetto Vamshiyulu.

Once of the popular Ayngarashakulu of Gadwal Samsthanam during the regime of Somanadri was Nagi Reddy popular called as Nagappa who dies in battle filed against sultans. Later Nagappa son Narsappa succeeded his father as the next Ayngarashakulu of the samsthanam but he too died in the same battle against sultans.

Gadwal city is very popular for Gadal Saris which is a traditional handloom Jari sari of 5.5 m length which can be folded down to a match box size because of the unique weaving technique of Gadwal weavers. This unique varity of sari was introduced in the year 1930. To this hand woven Gadwal cotton saris attractive silk borders and pallow can be attached. The main feature of Gadwal Saris is that every year the Lord Venkateswara Brahmotsavam commences with Gadwal Sari only which marks its popularity among the people.
